Wood Staining and Varnishing in Canary Wharf

Natural wood grain brought out with stain and sealed with varnish for lasting protection.

(The job)

How we approach wood staining and varnishing

Stain shows every mark underneath it, so the wood is sanded back evenly before anything goes on. A test patch is done first, so you see the colour on your own wood before the whole piece is finished.

Stain and varnish go on along the grain in thin, even coats, with a light sand between coats for a smooth, lasting finish.

(What is included)

  • Old finish sanded back
  • Stain matched to the colour you want
  • Even coats along the grain
  • Clear varnish to seal

How it works

Protect: wood staining and varnishing
(01)

Protect

Floors and the surrounding area are covered before work starts. Nearby walls are masked. Stain marks anything it touches, so nothing is left to chance.

Sand back: wood staining and varnishing
(02)

Sand back

The old finish is sanded off evenly. Stain shows every mark underneath it. A consistent surface means the colour takes the same everywhere.

Stain: wood staining and varnishing
(03)

Stain

A test patch comes first, so you approve the colour on your own wood. The stain then goes on in thin, even coats along the grain. Each coat dries before the next.

Seal: wood staining and varnishing
(04)

Seal

Clear varnish goes on to protect the wood. A light sand between coats keeps it smooth. Two or three thin coats last far longer than one thick one.

Questions about wood staining and varnishing

Can you match an existing stain colour?

A test patch is done on your own wood first, so you see and approve the colour before the whole piece is finished.

How many coats of varnish do you use?

Usually two or three thin coats with a light sand between them, which lasts longer than one thick coat.

Can you stain wood that has been painted?

Paint has to be stripped back to bare wood first, which is more work. You will be told honestly at the quote visit whether it is worth it.

Do you varnish floors?

Small areas and stairs, yes. Large floors that need machine sanding are best done by a floor specialist, and you will be told if that is the case.

Is stain or varnish better for outside?

Outside wood needs a product made for exterior use, usually a stain with built in protection, because clear varnish can crack in the sun.
