Staircases and Banisters in Canary Wharf

Spindles, rails and treads sanded and finished by hand, for a hallway that makes a first impression.

(The job)

How we approach staircases and banisters

A staircase is the first thing anyone sees in a hallway, and it takes more knocks than any other woodwork in the house. Every spindle is sanded by hand, every dent filled, so the finish is smooth from the top rail to the bottom step.

The stairs stay usable while the work goes on: treads are painted in a sequence so you can still get up and down, and nothing is walked on until it is dry.

(What is included)

  • Stairs and hallway floors protected
  • Spindles, rails and treads sanded by hand
  • Gaps and dents filled
  • Undercoat and top coat brushed on

How it works

Protect: staircases and banisters
(01)

Protect

The hallway floor, the walls beside the stairs and the carpet edges are covered first. Anything that cannot move is masked. Your hallway stays clean from the first minute.

Sand: staircases and banisters
(02)

Sand

Spindles, rails and treads are sanded by hand to take off old gloss. Dents and gaps are filled and sanded flush. The new coat then has a sound surface to grip.

Paint: staircases and banisters
(03)

Paint

Undercoat goes on first, then the top coat, brushed so every turned spindle is covered evenly. Treads are done in a sequence. There is always a way up and down while the rest dries.

Finish: staircases and banisters
(04)

Finish

Tape comes off once the paint is dry. The hallway is cleaned and the dust sheets lifted. You check every step together before the job is signed off.

Questions about staircases and banisters

Can we still use the stairs while you paint them?

Yes. Treads are painted in a sequence, usually every other step, so there is always a way up and down while the rest dries.

Do you strip old paint off spindles?

Where old paint is flaking or built up, it is sanded or scraped back. Sound paint is sanded to give the new coat a key, which is usually all a staircase needs.

How long does a staircase take?

Most staircases take two to three days, because each coat needs to dry before the next and the treads are done in a sequence.

Do you paint the walls of the stairwell too?

Yes. The hall, stairs and landing walls can be done at the same time, which is often the best value as the area is already protected.

Can you paint over varnished banisters?

Yes. Varnished wood is sanded to give a key and primed, so the paint grips properly and does not peel.
