How we approach plaster and crack repair

Cracks and holes show through new paint, however good the colour. They are opened up where needed, filled, and sanded flush so the repair disappears once painted.

Small repairs are part of every painting job. Larger areas of damaged plaster are looked at on the quote visit.

(What is included)

  • Hairline and settlement cracks
  • Holes from fixings and old fittings
  • Sanding to a smooth finish
  • Ready for painting

How it works

Open and clean: plaster and crack repair
(01)

Open and clean

A crack only stays filled if the filler has something solid to hold. So each one is opened up and the loose material cleared away. Skipping this is why so many cracks come back.

Fill: plaster and crack repair
(02)

Fill

Deep cracks are built up in layers, never in one go. Each layer sets before the next goes on. It takes longer, and it holds.

Sand flush: plaster and crack repair
(03)

Sand flush

Every repair is sanded flush with the wall around it. Bakhodirjon checks it by hand and by eye until it disappears. Then the wall is ready for its first coat.

Questions about plaster and crack repair

Can you just paint over cracks in plaster?

Not if you want them gone. Paint bridges a hairline crack for a while, but it reappears as soon as the wall moves. Cracks need opening up, filling and sanding flush before painting.

What do painters use to fill cracks?

A ready mixed or powder filler for most cracks and holes, and a flexible decorator's caulk where walls meet ceilings and woodwork, which move slightly with the seasons.

Is there a paint that fills in cracks?

Some textured and flexible paints hide fine hairline cracks, but no paint repairs them. On a smooth wall a filled and sanded repair always looks better.

Why do cracks come back after filling?

Usually because the crack was filled without being opened up and cleaned, or because it is a movement crack between two materials. Those need a flexible filler or caulk rather than a rigid filler.

Are cracks in a new build normal?

Yes, small cracks are common in the first year or two as a new building dries out and settles. Many owners have them filled and the walls painted once, at the end of the defects period.
