Getting your home ready for a painter

A painting job goes faster and finishes cleaner when the room is ready on the first morning. None of this is required, everything is covered and protected anyway, but it saves time and keeps your things out of the way.

Clear what you can. Small furniture, ornaments, pictures and anything on the walls are best moved out or into the middle of the room. Large pieces can stay and will be covered.

Take down curtains and blinds if you can, and empty shelves on the walls being painted.

Think about where pets and children will be. Rooms being painted are working areas, with ladders, open tins and wet paint.

Decide on colours early. If you are choosing between two, buy a sample pot of each and paint a large patch on two walls, then look at them in the morning and the evening before you decide.

Agree what is staying the same. If the woodwork or ceiling is not being done, say so at the quote visit, so the price and the plan match what you want.
