Choosing a white: why warm whites work in London homes

White is the most popular choice for a full redecoration, and the hardest to get right. There are hundreds of whites, and the difference between them shows up most in the light you actually live with.

Brilliant white is very bright, and in a room without much direct sun it can look grey or slightly blue. Warm whites have a little yellow or red in them, which softens that.

On a recent job in Poplar, a three storey house was painted throughout in Farrow and Ball School House White, No. 291, a soft off white. It keeps rooms light without the hard look of brilliant white.

Whatever white you are considering, paint a large sample on more than one wall and look at it at different times of day. The same white can look very different on a sunny wall and a shaded one.
